It could be that there is no intelligence that lies behind the universe. That once upon a time there was nothing, then nothing spontaneously exploded and created everything, and somethings started asking how it all happened thinking that they somehow, magically had more power to think independently than say a rock, or a cloud.

"There was a force, like a man, who lived outside of everything ever and then created everything everywhere because he wanted to test his children to see if they loved him but gave them absolutely no evidence of his existence and relied on a word of mouth, storytelling experience to pass his message of love to people that dont know he is there and did what animals do best, which is to fuck everything that moves, take everything they want and to brain anyone who tries to stop them. He then sent rules down to a beardy bloke in the mountains and then fucked a bird without consent, destroying her loving relationship with Joe, to create a half Human, half God that he would kill for recompense for all the broken rules that he made up to test his children's love for him.
I'll go with the 99.9% of stuff that science can explain about the big bang and trust that they will work out the other important 0.1% if its all the same to you.

The term 'intelligent design' was coined by some American creationists as a way of sneaking creationism into schools as a legitimate scientific theory. Better just to call it creationism rather than legitimise it.

The question is a false dichotomy, it isn't intelligent design or/anything, because intelligent design (the type that creationists promote which is what we discuss when the word is used) is demonstrably false. Even if evolution by natural selection were disproved, that wouldn't somehow prove intelligent design correct by default.
